Year 7 students at TIBHS were recently treated to some industrial expertise as part of their Design Engineer Construct!® (DEC) learning programme. They were joined by a variety of experts from Capita, Wates, John McAslan Partnership, BWB Consulting and CPWP who helped the boys design an “eco-friendly” school.
The students were given visual guidance plus technical support from Architects, Structural Engineers and Mechanical and Electrical Engineers who gave specialist advice and guidance for the boys to produce their own design building. Such in-depth technical support from high profile multi-national companies proved an amazing experience for the students who may consider careers in the built environment.
With high levels of Maths and Science forming part of the afternoon, the programme not only develops knowledge and understanding of DEC issues but compliments work that students undertake in other areas of their school life
TIBHS’ Assistant Principal Mr Matadar commented,
“This was a unique way of engaging our students into the real world of the built environment. This showed everyone that the Design, Engineer and Construction industries go far beyond simply bricklaying. Such opportunities not only have a careers element to it but also supports cross-curricular links to other areas too. As a result, the students are now much further on in planning and designing their eco-friendly school.”
