Spotlight on Architectural Technology: Wiktor’s Story
Architectural Technology is a creative and innovative design discipline which integrates architecture, science, technology, engineering and maths. Despite its clear alignment with STEM subjects, very few young people know about it!
Not so for the DEC pupils of Drummond Community High School. Thanks to global company Laing O’Rourke’s support through the Adopt A School scheme, pupils experienced first hand the use of digital technologies on the nearby £1 billion redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James’ Centre.
This sparked an interest that has seen many students from this extraordinary school engage in the DEC programme and indeed, progress to careers in the Built Environment.
We’re shining a light on one particular student, Wiktor Rauba, who chose Architectural Technology as his ideal pathway.
“[DEC] is pretty fun and we get to know how to use eco-friendly stuff and meet architects and other people.”
Wiktor, Age 13 – Week 6 of DEC
DEC soon became Wiktor’s favourite subject at school and his talent for technology quickly emerged, as did his focus on a technical discipline.
He passed his Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications and was a member of the winning “DEC Future Infrastructure” team. Wiktor and three exceptional classmates showcased their Hyperloop station designs to the world’s top engineers at Bentley Systems’ “Year in Infrastructure” Awards in Singapore.
Wiktor is now 20-years-old and about to enter his third year studying for a degree in Architectural Technology.
Made with the kind support of our friends at the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Edinburgh Napier University and Drummond Community High School, this short film outlines the merits of a very important profession and a career that many DEC students aspire to.
“We are passionate about the next generation of Architectural Technology professionals and we value our relationship with Class Of Your Own, as their Design Engineer Construct! programme introduces so many learners to the built environment which is full of possibilities. As Wiktor demonstrates, it is an exciting and rewarding profession to be a part of!”
