Real-World Learning in Action: How DEC Ambassadors Inspire the Next Generation

As a proud DEC Ambassador, John Haylett from AtkinsRéalis played a key role in an inspiring student visit to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP).

Through expert insights, hands-on feedback, and an immersive site tour, John demonstrated how DEC Ambassadors bridge the gap between education and professional careers in the built environment.

“Through sessions like this, DEC Ambassadors like John inspire the next generation of DEC students, connecting education to real-world industry experiences and demonstrating the exciting career opportunities within the Built Environment.”

An interactive learning experience

John began the session by delivering an engaging presentation on Building Surveying, where he explored the critical role of an NEC Supervisor and shared insights from his own journey into the built environment industry.

This was followed by a project-sharing workshop, where students presented their coursework and received valuable feedback and guidance on their proposals.

VISIT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Expert Industry Insights: John’s presentation on Building Surveying and the Stratford Waterfront development.

  • Hands-On Learning: Students showcased their coursework, receiving tailored feedback and guidance.

  • Immersive Site Visit: A walking tour of QEOP, including the UAL London College of Fashion building.

Bringing the Built Environment to life

The afternoon continued with a walking tour of QEOP, where John led the group through the new UAL London College of Fashion building.

In the foyer, he brought the structure to life by explaining how a Building Surveyor assesses such a development, drawing from his own experience of working on-site.

Students were able to gain further insight into built environment professions on our visit. It was fantastic to hear from John about his journey after DEC – making future pathways feel that much more tangible!

As well as touring the new buildings on the Olympic Park and enjoying the variety of presentations from LLDC, the students also had the opportunity to share their own project work and receive invaluable professional feedback”
