Inspiring the next generation of sustainable engineers.
Across the world, engineers and designers are revolutionising how we travel, pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly innovation to reduce carbon emissions and protect our planet.
As climate change remains one of the biggest global challenges, the need for sustainable infrastructure has never been more urgent.
That’s why we set an ambitious challenge for secondary school students aged 11-16: Design a NET ZERO Rail Station and Route – a forward-thinking community hub that not only connects to a mainline station but also stands as a beacon of sustainability, inclusivity and innovation.
The challenge… and an exceptional standard of entries
Students from around the world took on this exciting design challenge, bringing creativity, sustainability and engineering expertise to life.
Their mission was clear: create a rail station that meets Net Zero targets, prioritises accessibility and biodiversity – and embraces the latest sustainable technologies.
With so many extraordinary entries, our panel of expert judges – Ian Watkins (Mott MacDonald), Elaine Lewis, Iain Miskimmin and Stefan Mordue (Bentley Systems) – had the impossible task of selecting a winner.
One school stood out. Their submission was praised as:
“A professional-standard, comprehensive stage 2 report – a testament to their outstanding talent and dedication.”
Ian Watkins – Project Principal, Director – Mott MacDonald
And the COYO Challenge 2024 winners are…
Uptown International School, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Our winning team didn’t just take home the title – they experienced the journey of a lifetime!
The students were invited to London for an immersive, hands-on week of exploration and learning. Staying at the stunning St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, they toured the city’s rich rail heritage alongside the HS1 team.
“A strong understanding of the challenges of transport hubs and introduced innovative solutions and accessibility issues effectively.”
Elaine Lewis – Managing Director – Cadventure
Taking their design to the next level
Their journey culminated in an exciting day at the Bentley Systems office in Bishopsgate, where they worked alongside industry professionals from Bentley, Mott MacDonald, Grimshaw, DCS Sterling and their Adopt A School partner, Turner & Townsend.
Together, they refined and elevated their design concept, experiencing first-hand what it’s like to be at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure development.
“The engineering integration was commendable, showing in-depth research and understanding of the concepts.”
Iain Miskimmon – Digital Advisor – Bentley Systems
