DEC students present on Samsung stand at BETT show and make new industry connections

Year 13 DEC students from Future Tech Studio presented on the Samsung stand at this year’s BETT Show. The invitation came in recognition of the group’s high ability and enthusiasm for learning about design, engineering and construction.

Samsung were looking for cohorts of students and teachers who could demonstrate how they utilise the latest technology in their lessons; an activity which is intrinsic to the DEC learning programme.

The students demonstrated the flexibility of Samsung touchscreens showing off their Revit skills and the use of multimedia content throughout the design process. Professional, polite and enthusiastic, they had very positive feedback from visitors to the stand and industry experts.

Rousing applause for 16 year old keynote speaker at this year’s Education Estates event

Practically every day, the media reports on the mammoth task ahead of the Construction industry to secure skills now, and in years to come, so it was inspiring to hear from a winning team that is changing the way young people are educated and employed.

COYO’s Managing Director, Alison Watson, Laing O’Rourke’s Director of Sustainability, Caroline Blackman, and St Ambrose Barlow Head Teacher Ben Davis and DEC teacher Dan McDonagh presented a collaborative vision for the future, based on an impressive track record.

But the highlight of the day came from 16 year old student Daniel Bateson.

Brave New World – BIM technology in Schools

One of the latest young recruits to the DEC learning programme is Olawaseun Olaiwon.

Sean, a Year 11 student from St Michaels All Angels Academy in Camberwell, London, produced an excellent new school design using Autodesk Revit Architecture. His teacher, Nicolas Riedel, Head of Technology at the school, is leading the programme which will be introduced to 12 students this term.

When he leaves school, Sean wants to be an engineer so we’re lining up some great work experience opportunities with key industry supporters. He will discover a wide range of disciplines, from engineering surveying to building services and structural engineering. He’ll also learn how some of the country’s most respected companies are embracing BIM.
