Inspiring the next generation of Apprentices

With so many Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) students exploring apprenticeships as their route into industry, we were thrilled to see one of our own leading the conversation during National Apprenticeship Week 2025.

The “Building Futures: Technical & Professional Apprenticeships in the Built Environment” session was chaired by one of our fantastic DEC Ambassadors, former DEC student and apprentice award-winner, Claire McHugh.

From DEC Student to Built Environment Professional

Claire studied Design Engineer Construct! at The Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, Ealing, before securing a degree apprenticeship in Project Management.

Now a Commercial Manager with Mace – a global consultancy and one of our ‘Adopt A School’ supporters – she’s proving how DEC can set young people on a path to success.

As a DEC Ambassador, Claire now gives back by inspiring the next generation of students, sharing her journey and supporting teachers in delivering real-world learning.

A powerful collaboration for

The event was organised by our friends:

  • Construction Leadership Council
  • Construction Industry Council
  • Technical Apprenticeship Consortium (TAC)
  • University College of Estate Management (UCEM)
    – home to many of our alumni, including Claire herself.

Why this matters

Claire’s story showcases the power of apprenticeships in the digital built environment –and the value of DEC in preparing students for these career-defining opportunities.

We couldn’t be prouder of Claire and all the DEC alumni shaping the future of the industry.
