Who
I’m Kori Hamilton, I’m 21 years old and I’m an apprentice.
Where
I work with Arup, “which provides engineering, design, planning, project management and consulting services for all aspects of the built environment” we also provide apprentice roles in all these aspects across our UK campuses and I found my role on the National Apprenticeships website.
What
My role is a technical trainee. I am being trained to become an engineer that can use various modelling software so that I’m able to bridge the gap between an engineer and a technician in doing both roles.
I will understand the engineering principles and be able to use modelling software to represent what is being designed.
When
I work full time with one day dedicated to day-release training where I go to college one day a week and study Building Services in Engineering. I’ve completed the Level 3 BTEC course and will begin the two-year Level 4 course in September 2014.
At the same time, I’m completing a NVQ course with the purpose of ticking of competencies to ensure my company is providing me with relevant work experience.
Why
Personally, I chose to do an apprenticeship as university fee’s had increased. Also, I felt that I prefer to learn by actively doing the task, rather than the theory base lessons taught at university.
I was selected to do Mechanical Engineering over my first choice Structural; however this has proved to be the best choice as I use maths and design software to create heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems everyday on a number of different types of projects from laboratories to hospitals.
