HELP International School, Kuala Lumpur: Building future-ready learners through DEC

When HELP International School introduced the Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) programme in 2024, the goal was to provide students with authentic, real-world learning experiences that would develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly complex world.

Today, DEC is embedded across both Primary and Secondary phases, engaging learners through industry-inspired projects that connect STEM learning with architecture, engineering and construction.

Year 5 and 6 students have explored transport infrastructure through the Design a Rail Station project, while Secondary learners have developed concepts for innovative restaurant designs, applying professional design processes and digital technologies throughout their learning journey.

A key factor in the programme’s success has been the investment in teacher development. Twenty-three members of staff completed DEC professional development training, enabling them to confidently deliver project-based learning experiences that connect multiple curriculum areas.

This commitment to excellence was recognised when Design Technology Teacher Alastair Kwan was named DEC New Teacher of the Year 2025.

Future-ready learning with real-world relevance

The programme has also strengthened students’ digital and technical capabilities, providing valuable preparation for further study and future employment.

“We emphasise that students spend the time learning how to pilot AutoCAD and create accurate and detailed floor plans, and SketchUp as an introduction to 3D modelling.

“We found that these skills translate well when students move on to pursue GCSE Design Technology and Engineering, using similar software for CAD and CAM in their assessments.”

By introducing industry-standard software and professional workflows, DEC enables students to develop practical, transferable skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how technology is used in architecture, engineering and construction.

“We ensured there were plenty of cross-curricular links, and Art, Financial Literacy and Mathematics skills all came into play throughout the projects, not to mention a wide range of soft skills.”
