Inspiring the next generation through real-world design challenges
Over four one-day workshops, 48 learners aged 14–21 from Nacro centres in Stoke, Southampton, Sheffield and Chatham experienced the world of architecture, engineering and construction through Class Of Your Own’s Eco Classroom Workshop.
A challenge with real-world purpose
Over four one-day workshops, 48 learners aged 14–21 from Nacro centres in Stoke, Southampton, Sheffield and Chatham experienced the world of architecture, engineering and construction through Class Of Your Own’s Eco Classroom Workshop.
Working on authentic design briefs inspired by real locations, students took on the roles of architects, engineers and project managers to design sustainable learning spaces that balanced environmental responsibility, functionality and community needs.
From Forest Park in Stoke to the Lower Test Nature Reserve in Southampton and Riverside Country Park in Chatham, learners were challenged to consider aesthetics, structural design, building services, cost and sustainability – just as professionals do every day.
The workshops encouraged students to collaborate, think critically and justify every design decision, developing valuable technical and employability skills while gaining insight into careers across the built environment.
Learning alongside industry experts
Industry partners, including Balfour Beatty and Willmott Dixon, played a key role in bringing the projects to life, with seven industry professionals sharing their expertise and providing valuable feedback throughout the design process.

Building skills that last beyond the classroom
Across all four workshops, tutors observed students growing in confidence as they applied existing construction knowledge to unfamiliar challenges, worked collaboratively to overcome real constraints and discovered new career pathways within the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector.
