The young people who go through the Design Engineer Construct! programme amaze us with their talent, as they have amazed people all around the world. Their skills have been celebrated on all social media platforms, and some of their projects have won top awards both in this country and internationally.

The children we work with however are not superhuman; to our knowledge, they do not leap over mountains or have the highest IQs mankind has ever known. Instead, they all have one thing in common.

Behind every single one of these amazing young people is a great teacher.

The COYO Teacher of the Year award recognises the fact that these unsung heroes need some recognition for the hours they spend behind the scenes and the very first award has been presented to someone who – from day one – has shown extraordinary support for his students, and fellow members of staff. This teacher has grown into a role model for every single teacher who supports young learners through the Design Engineer Construct programme, getting the first-ever group of students through their Level 2 qualification by the end of Year 9, and helping those with a real interest to find opportunities to progress into their chosen careers.

The bar is set high by this man – but he’s always on call to share his knowledge with others.
This year’s Teacher of the Year award is presented to Simon Edwards, Head of Design and Engineering at Archbishop Sentamu Academy, Hull.

Congratulations Simon – keep up the good work!
